Some may not like what I am about to say
some may feel i am a racist for what I am about to say

as to being a racist let me first of all say you are an idiot if you think I am racist.
A racist thinks their race is superior to all races. I do not personally believe that we are superior,

just better at some stuff. :p

seriously,
it already ticks me off because there are no decent or NORMAL characters of color in anime or manga. (Except in ONE and that is Eureka7, who beats every anime ever made with a whopping
THREE black characters who are normal people!!!)

But this is what I don't get.

There are TONS of black folks on here, that draw nothing but white people and non-blacks.

my question is..why?

If any of you feel I am singling you out, that's too bad. While i do indeed respect your craftwork and abilities no doubt, I can't help but question your mindsets.
It's bad enough we are under AND misrepresented in life, but damn if art imitates life.
WE can control our ART.

WE can put positive artistic images out there of US out there. Because you know amerikkka ain't gonna do it, the Natives, aren't goin to do it. Asians aren't going to do it. WE have to do it.

I am not saying all of a sudden you become stuck in OhnoeeeZ1!111 I must draw m00r n3gr0es! mode. Just check your gallery, and check your mind.

I agree. How else if we want to see more of what you see in the mirror daily, reflected back to you from art and media if we don't represent it ourselves?

Hum... *glances back through gallery and sketchbooks* Well, I actually must thank you. I take things like this rather seriously and I think I will try to increase the colors of my characters. Honestly something I've been trying to avoid for fear of offending someone, never occured to me it would be more offensive not to have them. My newest character is /almost/ black, but still, that's just one. I hope you take a look at my gallery in the future to see how I come along.

Interesting journal.

On the subject of anime and manga, you must remember that Japan is a very isolated country. It's not like America where we see so many different people in our daily travels. They're not going to draw set out to draw other ethnicities too often. Wouldn't you expect a comic coming from, say, Algeria to have only a few white people in it? People create from what they know.

You are quite right in saying that we as black people, need to watch what we draw and deem beautiful. When I started drawing in an anime style I refused to draw my people until I'd come up with a way to respresent them beautifully in this style and not make them look like chocolate dipped versions of other characters. Other, less experienced or skilled, artists may just find it too hard to draw us in that style.

I can understand where you come from a bit. I indeed do like to see black characters in anime, but it's possibly only because they stand out from all the other characters. I'm personally less passionate about a multicultural cast than I am about a colorful cast. I personally prefer it when none of the characters share skin color the same most none of the characters would normally share eye or hair color.

I think a lot of accusations I'm hearing about anime containing mostly Caucasians are unfounded and misinformed. Blond hair, blue eyes, and round eyes hardly mean jack when the character next to them has blue hair and next to her is a character with pink hair. When someone accused Naoko Takeuchi of making Sailor Moon white in an interview, she was completely puzzled by it. The thought never even crossed her mind. Hair and eye color are supposed to be indications of personality, nothing more. Big eyes are only supposed to be indications of innocence/cuteness, not nationality.

The fact of the matter is that, with a few exceptions like Full Metal Alchemist, you hardly ever see Caucasians in anime. It's 98% Japanese people, and when you do see Africans, they're almost always in military roles because the only Africans the Japanese people see are on military camps. When you see Caucasians, they're either flamboyantly British/French/whatever, or they're extremely loud and slob-ish Americans, because 98% of anime operates on type-casts/stereotypes/archetypes. It seems most of the minds behind anime are unwilling to go far beyond that.

Anyone who would call you rascist for this would indeed be a jackass who just wants to stir shit up.

On a serious note, I feel you. First of all, I'm a white. (Not American though, Bahamian. I hope nothing I have to say offends you, however. But then again, you don't seem like the 'touchy' type. )
I, for one, would be happier to see more black characters in regards to ANYTHING. (More Latins too)

But you know...I agree with a former commentor. Most people, when they are building a character, use their personality rather then their race to define who or what the character is. From there, they decide names, physical attributes, etc. That's the way I work too. So, I do understand where they were comming from.

But I do see your point as well. In fact, my brow seems to rise everytime I see a black artist that has more white characters than black ones. [Not that I dislike it, just...find it a bit odd.]

Anime characters were more or less originally supposed to be asians though. (now whether some of the characters dyed their hair blonde and put in blue contacts is another topic for discussion entirely ^^; I mean come on, some of them had florescent pink!)

Props though. You make a some good points.
